History of Advocacy

Now working from an historic building that dates back to 1896, Harvey Jackson Law has its own rich legacy with origins in 1979. The office building, in the shadows of Henderson’s historic fire station and iconic clock tower, has nearly a century of history as a law office.

Harvey Jackson Law was established in Henderson, North Carolina, in May of 1979. From 1979 until the early 1990s the firm was a small-town general practice. Beginning in the early to mid-1990s, the firm switched its emphasis from a general practice to a practice focusing on workers’ compensation and personal injury, along with traffic citations and general civil litigation.

The first location for the law firm was a suite of offices located in what was then known as the Corbitt Hills Center, on Dabney Drive, in Henderson. This site is now occupied by Truist Bank, formerly Branch Banking & Trust Company (BB&T). In 1985, the firm moved to its present location at 125 N. Garnett Street, at the corner of North Garnett Street and Young Street near the heart of downtown Henderson.

The Harvey Jackson Law building is on the North Carolina Registry of Historical Places. The building was constructed in 1896 and is considered an example of the “Turn-of-the-Century mercantile” architectural style. The structure was originally a mercantile establishment, from the turn of the century until the mid-1920s, when it was converted, over a period of several years, to an office building.

In 1931, the Gholson brothers, T.P. and Waddell, opened a law office in a portion of the previous mercantile establishment. For about 10 years, the building was home to the Gholson and Gholson law firm, the real estate office of Merle Peace, and the office of F.B. Hight, a local Justice of the Peace.

From 1950 forward, the building was solely occupied by the Gholson and Gholson law firm. The Gholson firm continued in existence until and after the death of Waddell Gholson in 1974 and concluded upon the death of T.P. Gholson in the year 1985. After the death of T.P. Gholson, the building was completely renovated by Henderson attorney Robert Fleming.

The Harvey Jackson law firm moved into this building in 1985, where Mr. Jackson has maintained a continuous law practice. As a result, this building has been in continuous use as a law office from 1931 until the present, a period of nearly 95 years.

The office is located approximately one-half block east of the Vance County Courthouse complex. Convenient parking is located in a lot beside the office building in addition to ample parking on both sides of N. Garnett Street.

History has been made on this corner for more than 125 years, and Harvey Jackson Law intends to continue building on this legacy by answering the legal needs of clients in Henderson and throughout the area.
